Art Therapy for “Heroes at Home”

Kelly Burns, PMHC, ATR was honored to be asked by The Independence Fund to help develop and incorporate art therapy into their new “Heroes at Home” Family Program which was held at Disney this year. The Independence Fund provides resources to severely wounded veterans, their caregivers and families. Art therapy has recently been recognized as an affective therapeutic approach with veterans and The Independence Fund will be incorporating that into their services.
For veterans, art therapy is a nonthreatening alternative to compose in images what is inexpressible to them with words. It is a way in and often the first step to organize and express overwhelming feelings and sensations they experience. Most importantly, their own artwork becomes the narrative to tell their story and is the foundation that we use to begin therapy. Their caregivers and family members benefit from art therapy, too, as their own experiences are unique and need support as well. Kelly looks forward to continuing to work with The Independence Fund to provide this much needed service.
